MARC KUEGLE, KÂMWÂTAN, 2023

Kâmwâtan is a Cree word. It is the feeling of calmness, peaceful quietness, or tranquility. The image is of the Thunderbird House located at the corner of Higgins and Main Street in Winnipeg, MB. I’ve been inside and passed by many times, but this particular day I stopped for a while and just observed. The snow slowly falling, the quiet sound of the wind, and the glow from the top window just made me feel at peace. I wanted to recreate this feeling for the viewers when they watch it. I used digital art, simple animation, and stock audio footage to recreate this moment. Neil Weisensal also came on board to compose a score for the short, adding some more calm and peaceful ambiance.

Kâmwâtan is a 3 part project. A short animation, a 3’5″ x 5’5″ painting installation, and a limited run of 10 digital prints.

Each frame is etched onto to mirror the repeating sprocket hole right next to it. POV Sprocket Roller is about bringing a small unseen element of film into the frame.

Each of us, carries something from our past that is inseparable part of our lives, whether it is pleasant or not. This could be from just a few seconds, hours, or even years ago. Human beings are all alive because of something, and memory and the ability to remember are two of the most important aspects that allow us to exist. The mind is the only place where no one else has access, and it allows you to let any thought or memory into it without fear. The present is inextricably tied to the past. Many times during the day, when we are living in the present fragments of the past pass through our mind. As someone who has recently left her homeland, family, and friends and begun a new life away from home, my life is filled with recollections of my past, even if they aren’t entirely remembered, vague, or distorted. The video reveals the inner layers of my mind. By entering my dream, you are witnessing moments from my past that sometimes they are like destructed pictures alongside vague voices.
