Lights on the Exchange 2026-08.jpg

22x22 is a public art initiative presented in partnership with Exchange District BIZ and PLATFORM centre for photographic + digital arts as part of the annual Lights On The Exchange festival

The program invites PLATFORM members to bring lens-based works into the public realm through illuminated lightboxes installed throughout Winnipeg’s historic Exchange District. Each year, four artists are selected to present their work in 22" × 22" lightboxes, creating opportunities for photographic and lens-based practices to be experienced by audiences beyond traditional gallery spaces.

Open to artists at all stages of their careers, and specifically PLATFORM Members, the program celebrates the breadth of contemporary lens-based practices while creating space for diverse perspectives on the Exchange District, its history, and its communities. While submissions are not restricted by theme, preference may be given to works that explore lesser-told stories and offer alternative perspectives on the neighbourhood.

Selected artists receive a CARFAC exhibition fee in recognition of their work and contribution to the city’s public art landscape.

Through this ongoing partnership, PLATFORM and Exchange District BIZ are committed to supporting local artists, increasing the visibility of photographic and lens-based practices, and bringing new perspectives into the everyday experience of Winnipeg’s downtown.
